(Or their dictionary app can do this automatically and display the entry for 電臺.)

Similarly, we rely on apps to apply the following sort of logic. 1. The user is searching for 電視台. 2. There is no CC-CEDICT entry for 電視台. 3.Try substituting variant characters. 4. 臺 and 台 are variants, so try substituting 臺 for 台. 5. Found a match -- 電視臺 is in the dictionary. 6. Display the entry for 電視臺. Even if the user were to search for a non-standard form such as 電视台, an app can use this sort of logic to match it with 電視臺, just as Merriam-Webster was able to match your non-standard spelling "Hong kong" with "Hong Kong". A while ago, I wrote a script to search a corpus. Whether I search for 電視臺 or 電視台 or 電视台, it finds the same results. For example, if I search for 電視台, it will display the following result among many others: 其中尼加拉瓜的電視台，已率先於4月下旬首映播出。 If I search for 電视台, it displays all the same results, including 其中尼加拉瓜的電視台【電视台】，已率先於4月下旬首映播出。
